MORE THAN FROTH AND BUBBLE

The "B" stands for "Benefit for All". And our certification comes after years of improving our processes holistically. Here are some examples of projects we’re particularly proud of that were considered during the application process that led to our certification:

🔸 Offering paid parental leave to all staff so that people have equal access to supporting and connecting with their families after a birth – regardless of sex or gender. 

🔸 Offering volunteer leave to all staff, so that they can contribute to charitable organisations and initiatives as part of their working day.

🔸 Offering a wellbeing benefit, to encourage staff to engage with initiatives – such as sport,  exercise or therapy – that support their mental health in the workplace.


🔸 Erecting the grain silo, significantly reducing our environmental footprint (less delivery emissions and packaging in landfill) and the labour of our brewers (saving their bodies from lifting heavy grain sacks). 

🔸 Investing in Carbon Accounting Software – Clima – to help track our environmental impact, and set goals for ongoing improvement across the business.

🔸 Installing solar panels on both our warehouse and brewery locations to generate our own, clean electricity, as well as implementing other technologies such as Frigid to drastically reduce our energy consumption in the first place.

GOOD BUSINESS, DOWN TO A SCIENCE

The certification is given by the not-for-profit B Lab, who are responsible for ensuring the required standards are met. They also provide resources and support to help B Corps continue to develop for the better. 

To calculate whether or not we qualified for B Corp certification, a score was given across 5 categories: Governance (i.e. how the company is run), Workers (support of employee wellbeing), Community (how we engage with others outside the company), Environment (sustainability, etc) and Customers (how we effect the people we sell products to). 

Companies must achieve a high enough score in order to be B Corp certified and maintain this certification. The median score for an ordinary business is 50.9, where companies need a score of at least 80 to qualify as B Corp – our score for our first application was 91.6!

Being a B Corp is a journey and a commitment to ongoing improvement – so, we need to reapply for certification every three years. And we’re excited for that opportunity to build on our score and the initiatives introduced to achieve it. 

GROWTH FOR THE BETTER

B Corps put people and the planet alongside profit – so this development doesn’t mean we stop growing as a company. It just means that we do so with an equal eye to our community, the environment, transparency and accountability. In fact, research done in 2023 into the financial performance and resilience of B Corps shows that B Corps actually outperform “ordinary” businesses and are more resilient.

Through our certification, we join great company within the B Corp network, which includes Young Henry’s and Capital Brewing from our industry, as well as globally recognised brands like Patagonia, Aesop, Rip Curl and RM Williams. So, it’s something our entire community can be proud of.
