Do you make any gluten free beers?
We do not produce any gluten free beers at this time.
The Grifter Brewing Company at times uses a product called Brewers Clarex, which we understand to aid in the breaking down of the specific gluten protein that causes allergic reactions. More information on the product can be found here:
https://www.dsm.com/food-specialties/en_US/products/beverage/brewers-clarex.html
We've sent away several samples of beers using Brewers Clarex for testing at Symbio Laboratories, all of which came back as "gluten not detected."A health advocacy officer at Coeliac Australia has informed us that "The CSIRO has done research into Brewers Clarex –Unfortunately the studies done have found that while Brewers Clarex may break down the gluten to some degree, it doesn’t remove or destroy the epitopes in the protein that are toxic to those with coeliac disease.
Further to this, at present, commercially available tests are not able to accurately detect gluten in beers (due to the level of fermentation involved in beer production)." Due to this, and the current Food Standards Code we are not able to claim these beers to be "gluten free" or "gluten reduced" and we have purposely not labelled or marketed them as such.
While customers with varying degrees of gluten intolerance have reported that they have found success in drinking beers which use Brewers Clarex, when asked about gluten free options we refer customers to the above information and choosing whether to consume these beers is ultimately at the customer's own risk.
The only beer we currently produce using Brewers Clarex is our Lager.
