COME FOR A ROLL: KEEPING THE AUSSIE BOWLO ALIVE

While the sport of lawn bowls is not an Australian invention, it’s fair to say that this pastime has been well-and-truly integrated into the Aussie identity.

In fact, since the first games played here in the early 1800s, the kitsch of the local bowlo has developed something of a cult allure. Affordable, down-to-earth and enduring, today the institutions draw crowds from every demographic – from Boomers to Zoomers, hipsters to retirees, tradies to yuppies and everyone in between.

There are around 2,000 bowling clubs in this country. Yet these historic relics and important community linchpins are in decline. Nearly 100 clubs have closed in the Greater Sydney region alone since 1980, according to a recent study by UNSW

We’re proud to support some of Sydney’s most iconic bowlos in surviving long into the future. From Ashfield to Erskineville, Marrickville to Clovelly, join us and drink in the unmatched atmosphere of the bowling club. That’s how you can play your part in seeing these oft hidden gems remain at the heart of our communities.

.

If you’re looking to get down to a local bowlo this week, why not head to Marrickville on Friday and Sunday, for their regular meat raffle? There, you’ll find our Pale cans among the prizes and, for a limited time, you can even try the Club Lager – a celebration of sporting club culture.
